We can’t see anything outside of us that isn’t within us.
What does that even mean? You might ask…
From the great Carl Jung what this means is that we don’t see things as they are but as we are. Your external world reflects your internal world, we see our external world through the lens of our personality - of who we are...
You and I could look upon the same world and see it differently, based on who we are, what we sort after and what we expect to find.
If you look the picture of the of the torch and where it’s rays of beams are notice how it captures within its light what it is focused on, everything else is in the shadows and it can’t pick up what it isn’t focused on…
Everything outside of the beam is excluded from the view, without shifting the torch it can’t pick up on what it isn’t focused on.
Our lives and the lives of everyone around us is the same thing we simply can’t be aware of things beyond our focus.
For example:
When we focus on something and it causes us to feel fear, we can’t feel courage or appreciation in that same moment. These two emptions are occupied in different areas of our brain and simply cannot be accessed at the same time.
In this example, the solution would be to switch our focus from fear to courage or appreciation. When we choose to focus on what we appreciate about the situation, fear fades away…
Let’s take a trip down memory lane and complete the following exercise…
Think of an event or time in your past that happened, and you were in angry or fearful about something and things were just not how you wanted them to be and answer the following questions.
1. Where was the event?
2. Who was involved?
3. What were you focused on?
Now, repeat the same exercise focused on courage or appreciation of an event or something from your past that you had appreciation for and take notice of the different focued areas.
Let me know how you go with the exercise!
